How to add a transparent overlay in CapCut
A lot of creators think they need a green screen file and a chroma key to put an animation on top of a CapCut video. You don't. A transparent file drops straight in, with cleaner edges and better quality than green screen ever gives you.
On CapCut desktop
- Import your transparent .mov (from the Transparent Background folder).
- Drag it onto the timeline on a track ABOVE your main video.
- Move and resize it in the preview window. That's it — no Remove BG, no chroma key.
On CapCut mobile
- Save the file to your phone first (from the email, or the download link on your order page).
- In your project, tap Overlay → Add overlay and pick the file.
- Pinch to resize and drag it into place.
Why not green screen?
Chroma keying always leaves a slight green fringe and softens fine detail like text and glows. A transparent file has none of that. Keep the green screen version as a backup for the rare app that can't read transparency.
If your phone struggles with the large .mov, use the .webm from the same folder — same look, much smaller.
